Picture #4
Smith Plantation Garden Roswell GA
P55, ISO50, f~20, 1/2sec, 180mm lens Feeling we had gained a basic understanding of the camera and film I decided to change the location to a spot in the flower garden. Moving the camera around 3-4 times I finally found a decent spot. The image in the ground glass was not as bright as the front of the house, so composition was tougher to guage. After several minutes of inspecting the image with the loupe I felt confident I had a decent composition. I also decided my relative closeness to the subject would require more depth of field so I chose f16 as my starting aperature. I then took a new meter reading. This time I was shooting yellow flowers and green foliage, so I knew I did not want to under expose. The meter suggested f16 at .4 seconds. I turned the dial on the meter until it read 1/2 second at f18. Since my shutter does not have click stops for the aperature, I selected a spot between f16 and f22. Note: many older shutters aperture movements are continuous without click stops. The Shutter speed is usally a click stop and one should not go between the speeds. I then loaded the holder and film and made the exposue. The exposure was correct, the depth of field was adequate and the overall composition was pleasing. Al suggested removing some of the top. I also did not care for the lack of color for such a colorful image. So it was time to expose using the sheet film holder loaded with velvia. I did adjust the angle the camera slightly downward and reset the focus and some movements. I knew I had a stronger composition. I took another meter reading and remembering recomendations for velvia I decreased my aperture slightly toward f22 for slightly less exposure. You'll have to wait to see the results of the slide as I have not processed it yet. |
